Now, close your eyes and listen to the sound of significant movements and\/or actions happening in that moment. What sounds do you hear? Heart beats, water dripping, footsteps, maybe bells . . .<br \/>\nWrite a poem using these sounds. Try establishing a rhythm by repeating the sound a few times in each line followed or preceded by what is making the sound. Some hugely successful songs use sounds in this way. For example, in &#8220;The Trolley Song&#8221; sung notably by Judy Garland in the movie <em>Meet Me in St. Louis<\/em> sounds are used to describe the first moment Ester meets John:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClang, clang, clang went the trolley<br \/>\nDing, ding, ding went the bell<br \/>\nZing, zing, zing went my heart strings<br \/>\nFrom the moment I saw him I fell<\/p>\n<p>Chug, chug, chug went the motor<br \/>\nBump, bump, bump went the brake<br \/>\nThump, thump, thump went my heart strings<br \/>\nWhen he smiled I could feel the car shake\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Trolley Song by Hugh Martin &amp; Ralph Blane<\/p>\n<p>And in one of the all-time greatest stick-in-your-head songs &#8220;That\u2019s Amore!&#8221; sung notably by Dean Martin, jingly sounds are what make us want to sing and dance along:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBells will ring ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling<br \/>\nAnd you\u2019ll sing \u201cVita bella\u201d<br \/>\nHearts will play tippy-tippy-tay, tippy-tippy-tay<br \/>\nLike a gay tarantella\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 That\u2019s Amore! written by Jack Brooks &amp; Harry Warren<\/p>\n<p>If you have your list of sounds, but you\u2019re stuck for a way in, use one of these songs as a model for your poem (that\u2019s what I did.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-caption\">\n<h3 class=\"text-align-center\"><strong>Set the timer for 7 minutes.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"text-align-center\"><strong>Start writing!<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"text-align-center\"><strong>Don\u2019t think about it too much; just do it. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>*<a href=\"http:\/\/kellybennett.com\/blog\/\">Kelly Bennett <\/a>and I began this 7-Minute Poetry Challenge over 1000 days ago.
