In its easiest form, a writer avoids using uncommon letters like X, J, Q, or Z. Or avoids words with \u201cing\u201d or \u201ced\u201d endings. More difficult lipograms avoid common letters like A, T or E\u2014E being the most common letter in the English language.<br \/>\nIf you think avoiding using E is tough, consider this: Ernest Vincent Wright wrote an entire 50,000 word novel, GADSBY, without using the letter E.<\/p>\n<p>Well, dang. If Wright could write a whole novel without &#8220;E&#8221;, surely you and I can write a poem without &#8220;E&#8221;, can\u2019t wii?<\/p>\n<p>Begin with a poem you\u2019ve already written. Revise it by deleting every \u201cE\u201d word and replacing it with another word, if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Or, if you\u2019d rather, revise the poem using only \u201cE\u201d words.<\/p>\n<p>Or, try writing an entirely new poem without the letter \u201cE\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>(And no fair intentionally mis-spelling words to avoid using \u201cE\u201d, that\u2019s cheating.)<\/p>\n<p>For Inspiration:<\/p>\n<p>American logologist A. Ross Eckler, Jr. recreated &#8220;Mary Had a Little Lamb&#8221; six times, excluding different letters each time.
