But that\u2019s bunk. At last week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vcfa.edu\/programs\/mfa-children-young-adults\/\"><strong><em>VCFA<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em> Writing for Children and Young Adults<\/em><\/strong> Alumni workshop flashing, clicking needles were everywhere. Co <strong><em>7-Minute Challenge<\/em><\/strong> creator, Cindy, is a big knitter. So am I, in my fashion. And in the same way, so are you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knitting is such a useful word. In the same way yarn becomes sweaters, wounds knit back together. Families are closely knit. Brows knit in consternation or contemplation. Thoughts knit together become ideas, just as words knit together can be poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/knit\"><em>Merriam-Webster <\/em><\/a>speak, knitting is \u201ca series of connected loops,\u201d so that\u2019s where we\u2019ll begin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Close your eyes and write down the first word that pops into your mind. One word. That word will be the title of your poem.<\/li><li>Next, quickly list words that you associate with your word. \u00a0From that list, choose the best five. <\/li><li>Take a moment to reorder those five words into a sort of pattern that makes sense to you. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/5225e775e4b0419ba4d7f35f\/1574883757340-QEZV2PH6QQ2I0B08SZOW\/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kODEHMGUBRgRRplOmqRomK1Zw-zPPgdn4jUwVcJE1ZvWhcwhEtWJXoshNdA9f1qD7Xj1nVWs2aaTtWBneO2WM-vKKmLGZcam4wNLVFkW8ocU3wCuzBZdxfWEqO227KYmPQ\/knit-purl+image.jpg?format=100w\" alt=\"Classic Knit-One, Purl-Two pattern\"\/><figcaption> Classic Knit-One, Purl-Two pattern <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s use our wits to knit those words together to create a poem. For our first effort, we\u2019ll use a simple knit one, purl two pattern. Consider those five words to be your \u201cknit\u201d stitches. The \u201cpurl\u201d part of our poem will be modifiers. Let\u2019s get knitting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Write your first \u201cknit\u201d word. Below it \u201cpurl\u201d two modifiers. Below that purl, write your next \u201cknit\u201d word, then \u201cpurl\u201d two; continue in this knit one-purl two pattern until you come to the end of your word list. Just like that you\u2019ve knitted a 10-line poem<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Set your timer for 7 minutes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t think about it too much; just do it!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Start writing! <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kellybennett.com\/blog\/\">Kelly Bennett&nbsp;<\/a>and I began\n  this 7-Minute Poetry Challenge over 1300 days ago.
